The Castle of S. Angelo Lodigiano, a fortress with an irregular quadrangular base, a typical example of Lombard military architecture, was built by the Milanese.
According to the Milanese chronicler Galvano Fiamma, its construction was completed on 8 October 1224. The Lords of Milan became the owners of the Castle: first the Della Torres and then the Viscontis. Around 1370 Bernabò Visconti donated the fortress and lands of S. Angelo to his wife Regina della Scala, daughter of Mastino II, lord of Verona who in 1383 erected the main tower in the south-east corner and had numerous Gothic windows opened in the Castle , at an expense, it seems, of 100,000 gold florins. The Castle was then conquered by arms by Francesco Sforza on April 14, 1452 to recover the lands belonging to the Visconti and on April 24 of the same year, therefore only 10 days later, the Sforza donated the Castle and the lands of S. Angelo to a mercenary captain Michele Matteo known as il Bolognino, for favors received, and for the occasion gave him the title of Count with a new name Michele Matteo Attendolo (name Sforzesco) Bolognini.
