The church is said to have been built by Emperor Ludwig the Pious in 814; in 819 the existing church was donated to the monastery in Buchau and given its special protection. The abbess of Buchau was the patron saint of the church and St. Antonius from 819-1803. The starting point is a Carolingian hall church. A larger Romanesque church was built from 1275 to 1280, as evidenced by the lower part of the church tower and the side walls of the choir that adjoin it. Around 1400 the church was expanded to its current shape and size, the altar consecration in the newly built choir was on February 18, 1402. With the construction of the vestibule on the west side around 1450, the construction was completed.
