The first class of the lower secondary school was founded in 1850 in Maribor and the seven-year upper secondary school in 1870, without its own building. The current school building was built in 1873 in a classicist style according to plans by the Graz architect Wilhelm Bücher and dedicated to its purpose. In 1924, the seven-year high school was transformed into an eight-year high school. In 1925, the first graduation exam in Slovenian was held. In 1941, under the occupation of the Third Reich, the Real Gymnasium was abolished during the Second World War. The German school Oberschule für Jungen am Tegetthoff - Gymnasium in Marbrug aa Drau is founded. 1945 the school was renamed Primo Ginnasio and then in the school year 1959/1960 | 60 First Gymnasium. In 1981, as part of the introduction of direct education, the First Gymnasium was transformed and renamed the Secondary School of Social Sciences, until 1990, when it was reorganized and renamed First Gymnasium Maribor.
