    - once proud oak, now habitat wood

A detailed description of the "Dicken Eiche near Kleinottweiler" can be found in the "Polichia" communications from 1944.

When it was recorded in March 1943, it therefore had the following dimensions:

Trunk circumference 1 m above the ground:

    3.8m

    Total height around:

    17.0m

    Largest crown width:

    20.0m

In 2002, an expert report determined that the oak was in poor condition. To save the situation, the upper part, which was particularly badly infested with a tree fungus, was removed and the tree severely cut back. In addition, a small roof was placed on the interface, which should prevent penetrating precipitation from further attacking the decayed trunk.

But all rescue attempts came too late. In 2011, the thick oak tree finally had no more leaves and two years later it had to be shortened to its current height for safety reasons.

      HISTORY

      The Big Oak of Kleinottweiler

The thick oak was the proud landmark of Kleinottweiler. Its first documented mention comes from a ban border description from the year 1520, where it was referred to as the "big mark". In records from 1531 it was described as "Great Eich". During this time it marked the Kleinottweiler district boundary to Erbach. Since one has to assume that the thick oak was already at least 50-60 years old when it was first mentioned in a document, it looked back on a proud age of almost 600 years.

In 2002, an expert report determined that the trunk was infested with spruce fire fungus and that the trunk had been completely eradicated, whereupon various measures were taken to preserve the space, but these could not save the old giant. In 2013, for safety reasons, the dead trunk was shortened to its current height of 5.50 m.
