About 11 kilometers north of Akureyri you will find the archaeological excavations of Gásir on road 816. In the Middle Ages, there was an important trading station here, the history of which goes back to the 12th century. More than 40 houses and a church were uncovered during excavations in an area of around 14,000 square meters in 1907. Gásir is now a listed building.

Every July, medieval life in Gásir is reconstructed with the help of Icelandic artisans who wear medieval clothing and sell handicrafts. The guests have the opportunity to experience the late Middle Ages and to get to know the professions and culture of that time. Actors in medieval costumes offer an interesting program based on life in Gásir, with goods for sale influenced by the era. Various handicrafts are exhibited; the craft of dyeing with plant extracts, woolwork, traditional sewing methods, sewing and weaving of leather.
