In the afternoon I had reached the dune on my way, but it was full of people, also the weather was not so intoxicating. In the evening again the 5 km driven to the dune and nearly alone experienced a dreamlike sunset. It is worth to be there very early or very late.

For a long time, the Rubjerg Knude Fyr was not open to visitors. The lighthouse stands on the North Sea coast of Jutland and has been regularly covered by a shifting dune since shortly after it opened in 1900. At times, it caused it to sink almost completely into the sand, so that even the beacon could no longer be seen. Much more threatening, however, was the erosion of the rock beneath the tower. The tower in northern Denmark was only a few meters from the edge of a cliff and threatened to collapse into the sea. The authorities therefore decided to save the listed tower in an elaborate project and move it away from the shore. In 2019, the colossus was successfully moved a good 70 meters inland. This saved one of the most important landmarks on the Danish mainland from disappearing, at least for the time being.

        Rubjerg Knude:
On December 27, 1900, the Fyr, the 23 m high lighthouse, was inaugurated on the coast of Rubjerg behind a then only two to three meter high dune, together with four outbuildings (the keeper's cottages). It emitted a long white beam of light every half minute, followed by two short flashes. This signal could be heard up to 42 km away.
From 1900 to 1906 it was equipped with its own gasworks, in the following years the flame was operated with petroleum and in 1934 it was switched to electric light. The lens apparatus consisted of 134 hand-cut Fresnel lenses that had been made in Paris for 42,000 crowns. The lighthouse was manned around the clock by a lighthouse keeper, an assistant and a stoker.
