The large Karlsteine, also known as the “Schluppstein”, are a passage grave. The stones used for construction are made of carbon quartzite from neighboring Piesberg. Of the four capstones, the western one is still on top, all the others have been tipped into the chamber. All 13 supporting stones are still there.
The grave complex was built between 3500 and 2800 B.C.E. and is therefore a plant of the funnel cup culture.
According to a legend, Charlemagne is said to have broken the capstone, which consisted of a plate, into several pieces with a whip.
This is where the stones got their name.
