In 1883, the expansion of the Main began, which was intended to secure the connection to Rhine shipping. Today, 11 systems from Mainz to Miltenberg, some of which have been retrofitted with pleasure boat locks and fish ladders, ensure free travel. After the First World War, a barrage and a hydroelectric power station in the Main were built in Mühlheim, called the “Church in the Main” because of its striking architecture. During the further expansion of the Main after 1965, the Mühlheim barrage was renewed. The new lock system (length: 300 m, width: 12 m, drop height: 3.77 m) was put into operation in 1980 and was later supplemented with a weir and a boat lock. The old hydroelectric power station on the right side of the Main was demolished in 1989 and replaced by a modern system with two turbines and an output of 4800 KWh.
