The Hotel Monte Palace, a former exclusive 5-star hotel, was designed to attract rich tourists.
88 rooms, spa, bar, disco ...
Around 200 days of rain and fog were probably the reason for the tourists' absence. Only 19 months, from April 1989 - November 1990, the hotel was in operation.
Subsequently, it was guarded for 20 years in the hope of finding an investor until finally giving it up in 2010. Since 2010, it expires. The main entrance leads to the old rooms. Parking is available at the hotel entrance if all are already occupied at the viewpoint.

Surreal: this prestigious hotel / casino had an incredible situation and is completely abandoned. The view is breathtaking. An ideal spot for photographers.Attention, security is not guaranteed: it is great that the site is accessible but I am not sure that it is officially authorized. Be careful, however, as there are many gaping holes (e.g. old elevator shafts).

The Monte Palace cannot be missed at all. It is located directly at the famous Vista do Rei viewpoint, which is on well-signposted road 9-1 to Sete Cidades. You can find more information about the Monte Palace, its planning and construction, as well as pictures of how it looked during “lifetime” in the exciting report Azorean Palace in the Clouds. Definitely worth reading! And if you have some money on the high edge: The Monte Palace is currently available for a slim 1.5 million euros.
