The Frisian freedom is still considered a special feature of East Friesland. In the Middle Ages, from the 11th to the 14th centuries, it was a unique form of society in contrast to the rest of feudal Europe. It stood for the federation of independent state communities on the Frisian coast. Their freely elected representatives usually met on the Tuesday after Pentecost, later Oll' Mai, on the Upstalsboom in Rahe near Aurich to ensure rights and freedom for all Frisians. The peculiarities of Frisian freedom: no military successes, right to property, political Participation and personal freedom.
