Behind the church a bar, a stop for many cyclists who pass on the cycle / pedestrian path.

According to an ancient popular tradition, in the Lombard era in the territory of Lonate, and precisely in the strip along the Ticino extending from Nosate to Somma Lombardo, there existed a town called Binda, a Lombard term which indicates a strip of land. No document to date mentions it anymore, and for this reason my historian friend Gian Domenico Oltrona Visconti, in his "History of Lonate" (1969), dedicated only a quick mention to it, with the motivation that "we must make history on documents". However, it is almost certain that such a conurbation existed, given that the discovery of some late Roman ollas in the Sant'Antonino area confirms that the great Roman road Como-Novara via Gallarate and Oleggio passed through Lonate. For example, the locality Pevereno, in which the vineyard that was the subject of the transaction between Aupaldo and Celsone was located, in which the oldest written attestation of the toponym "Lonnate" is found (see), probably derives its name from the late Latin "paraveredus ", which means "horse", and therefore indicates a point for changing and stabling horses, probably located on the edge of an important road. It can only be identified as the Como-Novara just mentioned (maps from the end of the 19th century identify this area immediately north of the historic centre, at the beginning of the current Via Repossi).

However, it is not entirely true that no trace remains of the city called Binda, evidently an important post office along the Como-Novara road at the intersection with the Ticino river. In fact, memory of it is preserved in the name of the oratory of Santa Maria in Binda, a small church - coincidentally - of very ancient foundation, however located not in the territory of Lonate, but in that of Nosate (the municipality immediately south of Tornavento, in the province from Milan); you can see a photograph of it below. I decided to dedicate this page to it because, although it is not strictly in the Lona area, as we have seen it is closely connected to the ancient history of our village and the entire area in which it is located.

This small church might go unnoticed by the distracted eyes of those whizzing by on bicycles, but it certainly deserves a stop. Built in the 13th century, the church of Santa Maria in Binda is today among the places registered by the FAI (Italian Environmental Fund). Put your bike down and go in to admire the cycle of frescoes dating back to the early sixteenth century. Find, in particular, the mysterious painting depicting the "dance of death", a skeleton inviting the final dance: an unusual subject in this region for that historical period.

Really suggestive little church. Stop to refill water bottles and a good coffee.
