The chronicle of the church records that construction began in 1680. In the following years, construction progressed to the point that the tower cap could be put on on April 28, 1684. Johann Georg Steinböck, a citizen and stonemason from Dresden, is named as the master builder. The church was completed at the end of 1687. The ceremonial inauguration took place in a lengthy service on January 25, 1688 by the then superintendent D. Kunad from Eilenburg.
