For a quiet slice of the East Devon pebblebed heath, visit the small nature reserve at Venn Ottery Common. Be aware that the boggy tracks and footpaths can get very wet underfoot, especially in winter.

Despite being relatively small, some 40 species of birds breed here, and four of the six British reptiles can also be found on the common: adders, grass snakes, common lizards and slow worms.

Keep an eye out for nightjars on summer evenings, as well as stonechats and Dartford warblers as they perch in the gorse bushes.
