  • Made famous by a Stone Roses concert in 1990 and subsequent film of the same name, Spike Island lies between the Sankey Canal and the Mersey estuary. The man-made island was at the centre of the British chemical industry during the industrial revolution, home to the world's first rail-to-ship dock in 1833 and the first chemical factory in 1848. Since 1975, the island has been regenerated for public recreation with woods, parks and woodland.
