    Funny idea, a huge sculpture

Great eye-catcher on the beautiful bike route on Pannerdensch Kanaal. The concrete sculpture of a mammoth is 4.7 meters high and weighs around 8 tons.

The artwork references mammoth bones found while drilling a railway tunnel.

        Source nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Mammoet:

The Mammoet is a statue that stands in Groessen along the Kandiadijk at the east side of the railway tunnel under the Pannerdensch Kanaal, which is part of the Betuweroute.

The concrete statue of a mammoth is 5 meters long and 4.70 meters high and weighs 8000 kg. It was designed and made by Joris Baudoin on behalf of the Betuweroute and ProRail project organization as a gift to the residents of the Duiven municipality. The image is a reference to the Betuwe Line as a "mammoth project" and the mammoth bones found during the drilling of the railway tunnel.

The statue was made in Heerewaarden and had to be transported over 70 kilometers to the intended location. The mammoth crown was shipped separately and reassembled after placement. The work of art was unveiled on 19 January 2005 in the presence of maker Joris Baudoin, mayor Zomerdijk van Duiven and Dr. John de Vos of the National Museum of Natural History Naturalis, which has been taking care of the mammoth bones collected during the work since the end of 2003.
