Rhine Ferry Gernsheim (Hesse) / Eich (Palatinate) 🚴‍♂️

The Gernsheim Rhine Ferry, along with the Landskrone Rhine Ferry in Nierstein, is the only way to cross the Rhine by car between the two Rhineland-Palatinate cities of Mainz (Weisenauer Bridge) and Worms (Nibelungen Bridge Worms). The Rhine Ferry connects the town of Gernsheim on the right bank of the Rhine in Hesse with the Rhenish-Hessian municipalities of Eich and Hamm on the left bank. 🚴‍♂️

The ferry is located in the immediate vicinity of the Gernsheim Rhine Bridge, which was destroyed in March 1945, and was put into operation because the bridge was not rebuilt after the war.

On December 21, 2015, the new Rhine ferry, named "Helene," operated by the Fretter family's Gernsheim Rhine Ferry Company, was inaugurated. This replaced the "Stadt Gernsheim" after 50 years of service, and the ship was transferred to the Nierstein Rhine Ferry. The new 62-meter-long vessel has 50% more loading capacity and can now accommodate approximately 30 vehicles. 🚴‍♂️

Yesterday I used the Rhine ferry in Gernsheim for the first time. The following applies here: Only cash is true! True to the motto, you can only pay in cash on the "Helene" and for EUR 2.50 the crossing is over pretty quickly.
