In 1792, the gate chapel of St. Cosmas and Damian was rebuilt from scratch on the foundations of its previous building. It could only be used in its actual function for 14 years because the Cistercian monastery in Marienrode was secularized in 1806.
After the monks left, the Catholic community took over the monastery church, while St. Cosmas and Damian was used as a pilgrimage destination and for funerals.
