The history of the Västra Vemmenhög church dates back to the 12th century. At that time there was a medieval church at this point, but it remained without a bell tower for a long time. This was only made in the 18th century from stones from the surrounding fields. It was later decided to renovate the rest of the church, but the tower was left in its original state, which is why the two parts of the building nowadays stand in an interesting contrast to each other.

If you look closely, you will notice several tomb stones that are connected to a wood trunk. Since the church is built on a small hill, it is pretty exposed to the elements, especially heavy winds. It is likely that the tomb stones are not strong enough to widstand the winds.
