The forested area of Pilis and the Visegrád Mountains, about 500 km2, was the border of the province of Pannonia and the Roman Empire in Roman times. Many relics of this period are preserved in the Danube Bend, where you can still find the remains of Roman camps and watchtowers that stood along the limes connecting Aquincum and present-day Esztergom. Most likely, the “Roman Road” inside the mountains served to shorten this main route, which some said connected the former Solva (Esztergom) and others said Castra ad Herculem (Pilismarót) with Aquincum.
