"Once upon a time there were seven Swabians who wanted to be great heroes and go on adventures all over the world. But so that they had a good weapon, they had a spear made, seven man-lengths long, the seven of them grabbed it and left in a row one behind the other. First came Herr Schulz, the Allgäuer, as the manliest of them; then came Jackli, called the Seehaas, then Marli, called the Nestelschwab, followed by Jergli, called the Blitzschwab; then went Michel, Spiegelschwab also named, then came Hans, Knöpfleschwab, and last came Veitli, that was the yellow-footed..."
