Saint Hubertus, to whom the church in Hilgerath is dedicated, lived from 655 to 727 and is a very popular saint, known above all as the patron saint of hunters. A stag with a shining cross between its antlers is said to have appeared to him, which is often depicted in portraits of Hubertus. This legend was originally attributed to Saint Eustachius and has 'migrated' to Hubertus over time. His memorial day is November 3rd.
