Probably built on the ruins of a pagan temple after the 4th-5th century AD, its current form is traced by Gaetano Panazza to the 11th or 12th century. Named after a misunderstanding to Santa Stefania, a figure not present in the Roman Martyrology, today it is the only remaining building of the ancient parish church and the current basilica itself has taken the name Pieve by extension
