An elegant place, with valuable buildings to watch over the statue of the hero of the two worlds. Piazza Garibaldi is the heart of Sondrio.

Piazza Garibaldi owes its name to the statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi, which was placed in the square in 1909 in place of the monument in honor of Emperor Franz I of Austria, whose bust was destroyed in 1848.

The statue of the hero and freedom fighter Garibaldi rises 3.60 meters on a stone plinth and thus dominates the piazza named after her.

Before this change, the square was called "Piazza del Monumento" and then "Piazza Francesco I". After the bust of the emperor was destroyed, however, it was renamed in honor of King Vittorio Emanuele II.
