In 1845, King Maximilian II had a wooden equestrian footbridge built across the Pöllat. It was built using conventional wooden construction, probably not particularly stable, as it had to be replaced just a few years later. To increase strength, a triple overlapping beam structure with side supports was chosen, a structure that was not particularly aesthetically pleasing given its 35 meter span.

This was precisely the reason why King Ludwig II bought this footbridge in 1866 from the Gustavsburg workshops of the Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Nürnberg, Klett & Comp. (today M.A.N.) to be replaced by a delicate iron construction. During the construction of the Marienbrücke, a completely new construction method was successfully tested for the first time: at a height of ninety meters above the Pöllat Falls, the girders were erected by fronting the individual girder compartments from the anchors fixed in the rock on both sides, without any further supporting armor.

In 1984 the bridge was restored and the girders had to be replaced. The original railings have been preserved to this day.

The Marienbrücke was closed at the beginning of August 2015 due to renovation work on the bridge's rock anchors. During the renovation, damage to the rock anchors was repaired and the coating on the metal structure and the wooden covering were renewed. The renovation costs amounted to around 650,000 euros. On August 4, 2016, the bridge was officially reopened by the district administrator of the Ostallgäu district and the Bavarian Finance Minister Markus Söder.
