Here you drive directly past the edge of the Garzweiler opencast mine. Several thousand residents and entire villages have already had to give way to this gigantic digging hole. Lignite mining has been controversial here for decades, because lignite is the fossil fuel with the worst climate balance. Grevenbroich-Gustorf also suffers from high levels of particulate matter. Until 2038, dredging will continue here and a further 670 million tons of lignite will be extracted. Initiatives such as “Endegebiet” are being organized to stop coal mining early.
