The Schinderhannes cycle path is a jewel among cycle paths - beautiful landscape, hardly on the road and wonderful views.

The Schinderhannes cycle path in the Hunsrück is 38 km long and runs as a railway path over the former Hunsrück railway from Simmern via Kastellaun to Emmelshausen. The path is named after the German robber Johannes Bückler, also known as Schinderhannes, whose raids mainly took place in the Hunsrück.

The cycle path was completed in 1999 and released for cyclists, skaters and walkers. It is completely paved and runs mostly flat over the Hunsrück north of Simmern in the direction of the Rhine heights around Emmelshausen. The cycle path is consistently signposted in both directions. Its black and white logo shows the eponymous Schinderhannes armed with a pistol. A total of 174 vertical meters of ascents and 289 vertical meters of descents can be expected between the start and finish point

The great advantage of cycle paths on former railway lines is that the gradient is only moderate, as even early locomotives could only travel uphill to a limited extent and valleys are crossed by bridges. This means that the Schinderhannes cycle path is also ideal for occasional cyclists, for a not too strenuous tour through the Hunsrück, which is not lacking in hills and valleys.
