The Mönchgraben is the historic border separating the Mönchgut peninsula from the rest of the island of Rügen. There lies the Baltic Sea resort of Baabe, which, precisely because of its location, is considered the gateway to Mönchgut. Until the end of the 19th century, the town, first mentioned in documents in 1252, was a very small fishing village with a few houses, which only developed with the rise of bathing.

Today, Baabe, with its historic town center and picturesque thatched houses, is considered one of the most attractive towns on the island, having been repeatedly named the most beautiful spa and recreation resort on Rügen. The main attraction, especially in the summer months, is the wide, fine sandy beach in front of Baabe, which extends to the neighboring resorts of Sellin and Göhren and offers excellent opportunities for maritime recreation. These three seaside resorts are also connected by the beach promenade, which runs between the dunes and the coastal forest.

Sights in and around Baabe include the village church, the Coastal Fishermen's Museum, and the Baabe Bollwerk with the Moritzdorf ferry at the junction between Lake Sellin and the Having, a bay in the northern part of the Greifswalder Bodden. Furthermore, the Baabe Heath offers an ideal area for hiking, for example, to neighboring Göhren, and exploring the beautiful natural surroundings.
