The beginnings of Siewierz date back to the dawn of the Polish state. The castle on the Czarna Przemsza River was the seat of the castellany in the first years of the 13th century. From the end of the 12th to the mid-15th century, the Silesian dukes ruled here and built the local castle. In 1443, the principality became the subject of a purchase and sale act: the seller was the Duke of Cieszyn, Wacław I, and was bought by Zbigniew Oleśnicki, the bishop of Kraków. From that time, until the end of the 18th century, the Duchy of Siewier came under the rule of the Bishops of Kraków, who, while continuing the secular rule of the Dukes of Cieszyn, adopted the title of the Dukes of Siewier - "dux Severie".

The gothic, brick castle, which was built in the 14th century on the site of a wooden stronghold from the end of the 13th century, became the seat of the princes-bishops. Over the centuries, the bishops rebuilt and modernized the castle. In the 16th century it was transformed into the Renaissance style. The already impractical tower - the so-called a bergfried, and a representative southern and western wing was built from the obtained stone. The fortifications were also strengthened in terms of adapting them to artillery. The entrance was defended by a small barbican connected to an artillery terrace. At the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle was rebuilt again, erecting the eastern wing with a chapel and covering the tower with a baroque cupola.

The ruins of the Bishop's Castle in Siewierz are a mysterious, historic place – great for a walk, photos, and a moment of transport back in time.
