Depending on the water level of the Rhine, the position of the ferry pier shifts here

"There has been a ferry connection across the Rhine on the territorially and strategically important section of the river between Walsum and Orsoy for several centuries.
The Klevian Orsoy became a city around 1270/1285 without any privilege of elevation and was confirmed in 1347 and was further fortified in several construction phases over the following centuries. The development in the Electorate of Cologne's Rheinberg, which was elevated to the status of a city under Neuss law in 1233, took place almost in parallel. For Orsoy, there is evidence of the establishment of a customs office in 1238/40, where a kind of river safekeeping fee was collected by the Counts and Dukes of Cleves from 1279 onwards. Around 1445, this actually represented a special tariff on Electoral Cologne goods during the Soest Feud (1444–1450).
For Rheinberg, there is evidence that the Archbishops of Cologne collected a Rhine toll from 1235 onwards.
There has been written evidence of a regular ferry connection across the Rhine in the Walsum area since at least 1657, when the tenant at the time complained that he was hindered in his work because there was "wild driving" on the Rhine. However, a translation option to this point probably existed centuries earlier. The ferry house on the Walsum side was mapped for the first time in 1713. Fast commuter service has existed since 1831.
Initially, the ferry was pulled across the river against the current by a horse and up to six ferrymen. The crossing took between half an hour and a full hour. ..."
