"The gigantic rock formations at this location also appear in another, somewhat more recent legend, according to which the rock formations were heaved to this location by the Byzantine hero Digenis Akritas to keep the Saracens from the north of the Arabian Peninsula away (7th-10th century). The name Petra tou Romiou (Greek 'Rock of the Greeks') comes from this very hero."
