The Białowieża Museum – Open-Air Museum of Wooden Architecture of the Ruthenian People of Podlasie consists of nine well-preserved buildings, which can be divided into four groups. The first consists of two huts standing near the gate. They have a slightly different character than the other buildings, because their attics have been converted into rooms for tourists. One of these buildings comes from the village of Klejniki, dates back to 1893, and was moved and reconstructed in 1988. The hall, room and chamber are open to visitors. It is worth seeing the fabrics and clay vessels typical of the region collected in the room. The second building is the oldest hut in the museum – dated back to 1885, moved from the village of Czyżyki. You can see there, above all, an oven for baking bread. The second group includes a charming wooden chapel (temporary chapel) dedicated to St. Alexander Nevsky, modelled on the temple from the village of Nowoberezowo. The place where the chapel stands is largely fenced off by a kind of moat, which makes it look as if it were standing on a small island surrounded by beautiful Białowieża landscapes. Two wooden crosses and a stone are placed next to it. The third group consists of two windmills (both come from Orla) and farm buildings: a cottage from the village of Biała, a workshop (so-called majsternia) from Widów and a barn from the village of Koszele. The windmills of the post type date back to the interwar years of the 20th century. The fourth group consists of only one exhibit - and it is a fence made of so-called balas. It was made by the founders of the institution in the years 1983-1984 and is a faithful copy of traditional woven fences. The construction of such a fence consists of three vertical poles and (vertically) interwoven spruce branches.
The landscapes themselves are a separate attraction. They can be admired both in the museum itself - they are truly fairy-tale! – and in its vicinity.
