The "Corridor grande in the castle square" was built between 1584 and 1586. The frescoed decoration of the walls was made in 1587 by Giovanni and Alessandro Alberti.

The gallery, although the name may suggest a connection between two buildings, never had this function. The gallery, on the other hand, was built to contain a collection of ancient marbles, the Duke's archaeological collection (consisting of busts, statues, epigraphs), which he purchased after his return from the royal court of Spain in 1578.

The collection of ancient marbles and trophies in 1773, by Austrian decree, was transferred to the Palazzo dell’Accademia in Mantua. In 1774 all the movable objects present in the ducal palaces of Sabbioneta were confiscated and above all the ancient marbles. In 1915 the Virgilian Academy ceded the property to the Municipality of Mantua, which deposited the objects in the Ducal Palace.

Today the marbles, recently restored, are exhibited in the gallery of the exhibition inside the Palazzo Ducale in Mantua.
