The oldest church on the island is the Minster of St. Maria and Markus, the former monastery church (monastery founded in 724). The whole of Reichenau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and rightly so. The cathedral is the core element in a central location on the island.
The cathedral has existed since around 724 AD, originally founded by Pirmin. The building itself has grown and expanded organically over many centuries.
After its foundation, it developed into a central monastery educational facility. Not only future abbots were trained here, but nobles also received training there, today we would say: in public administration. From there they moved to all corners of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, as clergy or as administrative officials.
Together they formed the backbone of Charlemagne's empire, which at that time stretched from Aachen to beyond Rome.
Their writing room (scriptorium under the treasury) was known for its high quality work. Not only was writing done for their own purposes, but many commissioned works were also carried out for rulers throughout Europe (gospels, music scores, codices). Much of what we know about this early period is only known because so much was written there,
distributed throughout Europe and preserved. Historical evidence of inestimable value.
The turning point (before Christ / after Christ) was invented on Reichenau.
For many centuries, the Reichenau monastery was of paramount importance, which is why it is also known as the "cradle of Western culture".
