The place was inhabited by the Romans. In 1168 the castle Biedertal was given as a back to Emperor Barbarossa. In 1269 it came into the possession of the Basel bishop. In the 16th century, the name changed to Burgtal and later to Burg. In 1815, the Congress of Vienna assigned it to Bern. In 1994, the place moved to Basel.
