The Augustenburg Castle is the largest residential building in the region.

The first Augustenburg Castle was built by Ernst Günther, the great-grandson of Christian III. built from 1660-64. He named it after his wife, Princess Augusta von Glücksburg. This lock fell into disrepair. Frederik Christian I built today's castle in 1764-76. The last duke left Augustenburg in 1848 because he participated in the Schleswig-Holstein revolt against Denmark. After being used as a military hospital and barracks, the castle was established as a hospital in 1932 and used for more than 75 years as a sanatorium. The castle now houses the agricultural authority. The garden hall, the Duke's study and the castle church can be visited as part of a guided tour. In the Pförtnerhaus you will find a psychiatric museum and next door a mini museum tells the story of the castle, the village and the ducal family.
