Breathtaking view of the valley, to be done absolutely by bike.

When you reach the "Top of the Gap of Dunloe," you feel the strain in your legs – and it was worth it. The view over the narrow mountain pass and the valley below is impressive, the nature raw and pure. Up here, the wind blows strongly against you, while Macgillycuddy's Reeks to the west and the Purple Mountain to the east rise, perfectly framing the view.

The path through the pass is no easy feat – for 11 kilometers, it winds steeply uphill, lined with rocks, and leads along the River Loe, which winds through the valley and feeds five tranquil lakes. The route has its own rhythm, and as you pedal, you notice how the landscape constantly changes. Sometimes shaded and framed by the mountains, sometimes wide and open, the path repeatedly gives you brief glimpses of the glittering lakes before it disappears behind another bend.

Feel free to stop often if you want to enjoy the view – each section tells its own story, and the atmosphere up here is hard to compare. Especially in changeable weather, the pass reveals its wild side, and the landscape becomes even more impressive. Some caution is advised on the return journey, as the descent is rapid in places.
