In 1765, the Kickenbacher Reidemeister (former job title in metallurgy) Johann Kayser received the concession to operate a steel hammer with fire or Esse (called "Kickenbacher Hammer"), which was located on the Kickenbacher Lennebrücke. The controversy that flared up again and again about the supply of the hammer with local charcoal is known from this time, as the charcoal burners allegedly did not adhere to the Electoral Cologne export ban and also supplied charcoal to the neighboring Siegerland. With the advent of new technologies such as steam engine and engine construction from the middle of the 19th century, water-powered metallurgy declined.
