The beautiful birds can only be admired in summer. On my tours I saw nesting sites in Kleinhadersdorf and near Oberschodalee.

It is a pleasure to watch the birds play their graceful flight games and to be able to experience their joyful reputation.

The bee eater is an endangered bird species according to the Lower Austria Red List, which has been looked after as part of a species protection program since 1999.

The bee-eater is one of the most colorful birds in Central Europe. It is one of those migratory birds that overwinter mainly in southern Africa. The colorful bird is on average 28 cm tall and the belly and chest area is turquoise. In addition to the exotic coloring, another typical feature is the long, slightly curved beak and the elongated central tail feathers.

The food of the bee-eater includes insects such as bees, wasps, bumblebees, beetles, dragonflies and many more, which it prey on in flight.

The bee eater is a colony breeder, which usually creates its nest as a cave in the slopes and walls of sand, gravel and gravel pits. The self-dug tubes are about one and a half to two and a half meters in length and about five centimeters in diameter. At the end of the tube is the breeding chamber that is enlarged in the shape of a bubble. The breeding season begins in mid-May after returning from Africa and continues with the rearing of the young until the end of July. The hatching of the only annual brood of five to seven eggs takes 20 to 22 days. The bee-eaters leave their breeding home for South Africa in September.
