    Madrid was a pioneer city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when it came to meeting the needs of the army. The urban barracks were becoming more and more obsolete in terms of space and facilities, so the Ministry of War began to build barracks on the outskirts of Madrid with a double objective: to modernize (and expand) the facilities and create a safety belt for defend the city in case of attack.

    The particular characteristics of the terrain made the new Retamares camp become the main center of the Spanish army for military practices. Among the facilities of this camp, the powder magazine stood out, which for decades constituted one of the largest ammunition reserves in the central area.

    The first powder magazine was built in 1912 in Montegancedo, in the center of the camp, thus avoiding the risk to the civilian population. These magazines consisted of a series of large artificial hollows that housed the deposits, so that the earthen walls minimized the effects of the shock wave that would cause an accidental explosion.
