During the First World War, Monte Rust was an important military communication point, using light signals and carrier pigeons, with a fundamental role in the network of forts of the highlands. Remains can be visited today.

the forest paths between Carbonare and Lago di Lavarone are largely very popular and frequented mountain bike trails. Refreshments and swimming facilities at the lake. The dilapidated Austrian fortress from the 1st World War on the summit of Monte Rust, at that time "Optical Signal Station Monte Rust", is not necessarily worth a visit, but offers a certain view (e.g. to Forte Cherle) and is +/- on the way.

During World War I, military communications were conducted via telephone and telegraph, linked by kilometers of underground cables. Fearing that bombing raids could easily cut them, the Austro-Hungarian army adopted alternative systems such as carrier pigeons and light signals.

Optical signals, in particular, found widespread use in communications between forts: this dedicated station was set up on the summit of Monte Rust, a modest elevation (1,280 meters) but strategically located centrally with respect to the empire's fortifications: Vezzena, Busa Verle, Cherle, Luserna, Belvedere, Sommo Alto, and Dosso delle Somme. It was also set back and therefore protected from the front line. From here, under the orders of the tactical command below, Virti, the operations of all the fortresses on the plateaus were coordinated.

Special holes cut into the walls, perfectly oriented toward the forts and observation posts, housed projectors that allowed the transmission and reception of encrypted Morse code signals. These metal tubes, still visible today, not only had precise alignment but also concealed the light source from the enemy. The smaller holes were used as telescopes.

Today, the skeleton of the building remains, and can be visited freely, including the gallery. Over the course of a century, the trees have grown, and the 360° panorama is only visible by climbing the building.
