During the First World War, Monte Rust was an important military communication point, using light signals and carrier pigeons, with a fundamental role in the network of forts of the highlands. Remains can be visited today.

the forest paths between Carbonare and Lago di Lavarone are largely very popular and frequented mountain bike trails. Refreshments and swimming facilities at the lake. The dilapidated Austrian fortress from the 1st World War on the summit of Monte Rust, at that time "Optical Signal Station Monte Rust", is not necessarily worth a visit, but offers a certain view (e.g. to Forte Cherle) and is +/- on the way.

During the First World War military communications took place through the telephone and telegraph, connected by kilometers of underground cables; fearing that the bombings could easily cut them off, the Austro-Hungarian army adopted alternative systems such as the use of passenger pigeons and light signals.

Optical signals, in particular, found wide application in communications between forts: this special station was set up on the summit of Monte Rust, a modest hill (1280m) but in a strategic and central position with respect to the fortifications of the empire: Vezzena, Busa Verle, Cherle, Luserna, Belvedere, Sommo Alto and Dosso delle Somme. As well as backward and therefore protected by the front line. From here, behind the provisions of the underlying tactical command of Virti, the action of all the fortresses of the highlands was coordinated.

Special holes made in the walls, perfectly oriented in the directions of the forts and observatories, housed projectors that allowed the sending and receiving of signals in encrypted Morse code: these metal tubes, still visible today, in addition to a precise alignment, concealed the source bright to the enemy. The smaller diameter holes were used as telescopes.

Today the skeleton of the building remains, which can be visited freely, including the gallery. In a century the trees have grown and the 360° panorama is visible only by climbing the building.
