The death of Ottavio Bottecchia is still shrouded in mystery. On June 3, 1927, Bottecchia was found dying on the ground: only two years earlier he had won his second Tour de France. This monument celebrates the life of the eighth son of Francesco Bottecchia, "the Mason of Friuli".

On 3 June 1927 a strange accident, probably caused by a malaise, struck the 33-year-old Ottavio while he was walking along the familiar streets where he used to train and still today there is no certainty about it. What is certain is that a great champion died that day. But the man who had made the greatest champions of European cycling tremble, the former cyclist bersagliere who during the First World War had earned a medal for valor.
