to explore the accessible corridors of the fort: bring a torch or headlamp!

It is interesting to see this archive photo. The fort today looks very different, after the bombings and demolitions for the recovery of metals.

Built by the Austro-Hungarian army between 1909 and 1914, it was later renamed 'Forte San Sebastiano' (in German 'Werk San Sebastian'), from the name of the nearby town, so as not to confuse it in military communications with Forte Verle.

Together with Forte Luserna, Forte Belvedere, Forte Sommo Alto and Forte Dosso delle Somme, it constituted the first fortified line of the Folgaria plateau, close to the border between the Empire and the Kingdom of Italy (today the border between Veneto and Trentino).

It consisted of two bodies, connected by a corridor: the block of casemates, where the soldiers were housed, and at a safe distance the battery block. Surrounded by a deep moat and three bands of fences. It could resist in complete isolation for over thirty days, without supplies of food or ammunition.

At the outbreak of the conflict it was immediately heavily bombed by the Italian batteries located near Fort Campomolon, located in a dominant position, as evidenced by the craters still visible today on the pastures that surround it. Between the two wars the roof was reduced to a mass of ruins by the recoverers, also using explosives, to obtain the metal it contained.

Despite an important recovery work, the fort is today largely unusable: some internal passages can be visited, some sections often with puddles due to water infiltrations.
