Giessen-Oudekerk probably originated around the thirteenth century; in the fourteenth century annual fairs were already held. The Gothic church with the large square Lady Tower is from the fifteenth century and still defines the image. For centuries Giessendam was part of the same village; in 1957, the municipality of Giessendam was dissolved and Giessen-Oudekerk and Giessen-Nieuwkerk were merged into the new municipality of Giessenburg, which merged into Giessenlanden in 1986, which in turn merged into Molenlanden municipality on 1 January 2019.
