"Living under the Rain Tower" Hundertwasser Residence
As early as 1985, two Plochingen architects planned the construction of a residential and commercial building as a ring structure around an inner courtyard, which would be integrated into the existing streetscape. The architects planned to accommodate 64 apartments, 16 commercial units, 300 additional underground parking spaces – combined with the existing 120 spaces in the neighboring building – and 2,300 square meters of space for a supermarket on the 1.5 hectare site south of Marktstraße. By 1990, the plan was ready for building permit approval – and that's when the idea arose to make the building particularly attractive through a special design of the inner courtyard. In 1992, the city managed to contact the Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. And he was actually willing to design the facade of the inner courtyard.
He was attracted by the fact that the viewer in the inner courtyard would have "only Hundertwasser around him and the sky above him" – a Hundertwasser world of his own. This was never the case with any of his previous buildings, and was also completely new to the artist. The developer gave his consent, thus paving the way for Hundertwasser's colorful fairytale world. The privately financed construction cost around 60 million German marks. Since then, the "Living under the Rain Tower" complex has become a popular attraction. The 33-meter-high "Rain Tower" towers prominently above the building, crowned by four golden spheres. For Hundertwasser, towers have always towered over important buildings as a "pointer to heaven," and thus the Rain Tower has become another landmark of the city.

The inner courtyard reflects Hundertwasser's philosophy of life: cheerful colors, rounded shapes, and playful balconies resting on sturdy ceramic columns characterize the landscape. Ceramic bands symbolize streaks of running rain, and trees grow from bay windows and on the roofs. Nature is of great importance to the artist, and thus the inner courtyard, beneath which the supermarket and underground parking garage are located, resembles a natural garden. All forms are organic, with no straight lines or right angles, and the windows seem to dance on the facade – every detail bears the signature of the Viennese artist.

Interesting architecture by the somewhat crazy "non-architect" Hundertwasser. Be sure to visit the inner courtyard.
