The church is surrounded by the remains of the old castle wall on a hill and offers a great view of the surrounding area. Here you can also rest under shady trees.

Holy Cross Church, great views and resting places, it's not for nothing that pilgrims have been coming to this beautiful church for 800 years.

The Catholic pilgrimage church of the Holy Cross in Oelde-Stromberg was consecrated in 1344. A previous building from 1207 burned down in 1316, whereupon a speedy new building was initiated; possibly including parts of the chorus that had been started earlier.

The Kreuzkirche was built on the highest elevation in the middle of the Stromberg castle area - this unusual location resulted from the Holy Cross, which was owned by the burgraves and had developed into a pilgrimage destination since the end of the 12th century. Especially in the 14th century it was an important place of pilgrimage; from the beginning of the 15th century the influx decreased. In the years 1589 to 1773 the Kreuzkirche belonged to the Jesuit College in Münster.
The Gothic hall church with three bays over an almost square floor plan with a 5/8 closure was extensively repaired in 1968.
