FROM THE REEF TO THE SEA
The limestone blocks here at the Tschapitbach stream are full of fossils. But that alone doesn't make them so remarkable. What's special is their origin story: they resemble the stones from Schlern and Santnerspitze. And that's also where they come from! They slid down from there 220 million years ago, tumbled into the sea of that time and rolled. The limestone blocks were then quickly enclosed by the fresh, dark mud in the basin and thus protected. So the fossils have been well preserved here – better than on the Schlern and Santnerspitze.
