Many generations of Briedel boys piled up the Martinsfeuer on this rock head in the vineyards behind the village, which then blazed high above Briedel on the fair Saturday, the day of the patron saint of our parish church. For weeks the children wandered through the streets collecting everything combustible with the cry: “Hot da nix firt Mertesfeier ....” And dragging everything up narrow paths, because there weren't any roads yet. The older boys were drawn to the adjacent forest, where the trees were felled and, with combined strength, dragged to the fireplace. That gave a lot of ruffle from the forester. In recent years, the Martinsfeuer has been relocated to the opposite side of the Moselle where it can be seen better from the fairground and the torchlight route. The construction is carried out today by the community workers with environmentally friendly wood scraps. As part of the land consolidation, the vineyards were opened up with paths so that today you can easily walk or drive to Martinslay. The beautiful view over the village and over the St. Martin Church into the Moselle bend and the forests of the hiking area of Briedeler Schweiz prompted the community to build a refuge up here in 2004. Fortunately, the Briedel construction community has taken over the financing of the building material, volunteers set up the space and built the hut. Some vintners are offering small wine tastings up here in the middle of the vines.

At the refuge there are several park benches, even one especially for children, and invite you to take a break. The view of Briedel and the Moselle valley is really fantastic. Unfortunately, the view is clouded by a radio tower that could have been built a few levels higher. From there it is easy to get to the "Briedeler Schweiz circular route", which is a real insider tip for MTB experts.
