The Hengsen Reservoir is largely isolated from the public and lies alongside the Bahnwald nature reserve between the communities of Fröndenberg, Holzwickede and Schwerte. Its dimensions are approximately one kilometer long and 250 meters wide. The drinking water reservoir Hengsen is only accessible on a very small section of the bank, which can be reached from the Lappenhausen street.
The Hengsen waterworks in the Ruhr Valley have existed since 1908. 142 hectares are available for water extraction. To enrich the groundwater, pre-cleaned Ruhr water is infiltrated into the subsoil via large infiltration basins.
Perforated seepage pipes hold the water in the subsoil, consisting of enriched groundwater, bank filtrate and natural groundwater, and conduct it to the pumping station in free fall.

The Hengsen reservoir, created in 1937 to produce drinking water, is located south of Holzwickede and north of the Ruhr. A special feature is the “Island of Hengsen” between the lake and the river. In addition to sedimentation, the lake also serves to recharge groundwater and is part of the Hengsen waterworks. Despite its use for drinking water, there is a walking path on the west bank that provides insights into the lake's idyllic location. An island in the reservoir is home to a cormorant breeding colony, which, however, has largely destroyed the vegetation there.
