In the year 836, there seems to have been an earthen defensive wall on the site of the present castle, with the aim of keeping the northern men out in front of the door. Several findings indicate that where today stands Westhove Castle, in the 12th century was a wooden fortification that made way for a housing / defense tower in stone. This functioned until 1572 as a hunting lodge for the mighty abbeys of Middelburg and among others Floris V and Charles V have stayed here. Westhove was taken over in 1572 by the Spanish occupiers and then recaptured by the Geusen and largely destroyed. Later, wealthy Golden Age merchants found the castle fit their status.

There is now a hostel in Westhove Castle. Who is curious about the interior may look into it. There is also a café and a terrace. The Orangerie next to the castle is home to the Zealand Museum of Nature and Landscape Terra Maris. Various hiking trails start here.
