The "Kreetsand" back dike project is part of the river engineering and sediment management concept of the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA). The former Kreetsand dike area was diked after the 1962 flood disaster and raised with material from the Elbe.
As part of the last levee increase, the partial back dyke of the area was planned as a compensatory measure, but was not initially implemented.
It was not until 1999 that the Kreetsander main dyke was moved back and in 2004 the dyke line that ran directly along the Elbe was dismantled. This resulted in a 47-hectare, albeit highly washed-up front dike area.
Concrete plans for further dismantling began in 2008. Two years later, the area became part of the nature reserve Auenlandschaft Obere Tideelbe and as a pilot project for the development of the tidal Elbe, the HPA set itself the goal of creating a freshwater tidal floodplain. Among other things, the measure is intended to lower the high water level of the Elbe by 1.5 centimeters, since more space is available for the Elbe again and the flow rate of the river is slowed down by a large tidal creek. Since then, Kreetsand has been in the process of being renovated: the wash basin is being removed to a possible flood level and a tideway connected to the Elbe on one side runs through the site.

For us, this section was "nice to have" but not necessarily that great 🚴‍♀️ because there was a lot of traffic at that time (weekend)...and then there was the construction site, where you had to be careful. Unfortunately, the access to the nature reserve was so overgrown, but a quick look at the map and we adjusted the route a bit – Jenerseitedeich / Goetjensorter Deich to the Moorwerder Hauptdeich – then over the dike and directly into the dike foreland...
